Como ya he comentado anteriormente nunca fui muy buen estudiante, me costaba muchísimo poner los codos sobre la mesa y, cuando lo hacía, mi capacidad de concentración duraba escasos minutos. En clase solo pensaba en qué iba a hacer en el recreo o al salir del cole y no me enteraba de las cosas, no por rebeldía o pasotismo, sino porque mi cabeza andaba en otros mundos. Todavía recuerdo con cierto susto esas mañanas en las que llegaba al colegio y mis compañeros me preguntaban cómo llevaba el examen… ¿Examen de qué? ¡Otra vez igual! Para ayudarme en mis eternas dudas en matemáticas recurría a mi hermano mayor que de vez en cuando me daba clases. Ahora que soy padre y que tengo que ayudar a mis hijos con las matemáticas comprendo un poco mejor a mi hermano mayor y sus hirientes comentarios hacia mi inteligencia en esas clases.

A pesar de todo, en los años de 6º , 7º  y 8 º de EGB iba aprobando las asignaturas más o menos como podía, sacando partido de mi buena vista, inventando un poco de aquí y un poco de allá o echándole un poco de morro a la vida, como en los exámenes de Sociales en los que sólo preguntaban el mapa físico o político de España y yo respondía el único que me sabía, fuese o no el que la suerte me había deparado, para después, con un rápido movimiento de manos cual trilero profesional, incorporar mi examen al taco adecuado. En fin… como dice la canción: “Pequeñas tretas, para continuar en la brecha”. Lo peor era cuando a mis padres les tocaba tutoría con el profesor de turno en las que les mostraban la cruda realidad: “Su hijo es un poco vago”. También ahí fui mejorando la técnica y conseguía poner una cara de pena y cansancio   que podría ser la envidia de los grandes actores de Hollywood y que reblandecía el duro caparazón de los profesores: “Vivimos muy lejos, me levanto muy pronto para no llegar tarde y paso todo el día muy cansado, pero me voy a esforzar más”. No fallaba y además no faltaba del todo a la verdad. En casa, yo era el primero de mis hermanos en levantarme, desayunar y cumplir con mis obligaciones que no eran otras que ir al coche, arrancarlo, poner la calefacción para descongelar los cristales y dejar el coche calentito para cuando llegaban mi padre y mis hermanos. Aquellos momentos los aprovechaba yo para, con mucho cuidado, mover un poco el coche adelante y atrás para ir “pillando el tranquillo”, ¿se sigue usando esa expresión?, al embrague del coche y para hacer el último repaso del examen del día sin mucho éxito ya que la tiritona hacía imposible la lectura.

Y es que, en invierno, en El Plantío hacía mucho frío. Había ocasiones en que, si llovía mucho, muy cerquita de casa se formaba un pequeño embalse. Una tarde de invierno después de varios días de lluvia, el primo Mike y yo, decidimos ir a ver cómo estaba el embalse y observamos que ya contaba con una fina capa de hielo en la parte superior. Como no podía ser de otra manera, nos quedamos por allí tirando piedras, buscando bichos y saltando de roca en roca para pasar al otro lado. En uno de esos saltos, la oscuridad de la noche me jugó una mala pasada y lo que yo creía que era una roca firme, resultó ser un gran trozo de corchopan, así que nada más pisarlo me hundí en las aguas heladas del pequeño embalse empapándome de pies a cabeza… puuuuffff, todavía puedo sentir la sensación mientras escribo, una impresión de frío y deshonor, bochorno y vergüenza. “No saltes, Mike” fue lo único que pude decir, mientras mi primo se retorcía de risa encima de una piedra, esta vez auténtica, a salvo del horroroso frio.

Además de matemáticas, mi hermano mayor me enseñó muchas otras cosas. Un día de 1982 llegó a casa con una cinta de Whitesnake, Saints & Sinners. Me dijo: “esto lo he escuchado en la radio y me gustó así que me lo he comprado”. En ese momento la banda estaba compuesta por David Coverdale como cantante, Bernie Marsden y Micky Moody a las guitarras, Neil Murray al bajo, Jon Lord al teclado y Ian Paice a la batería… casi nada. En ese disco había dos canciones que, para mí, destacaban sobre el resto, una era “Crying in the rain” y la otra “Here I go again”. Me enamoré de la segunda. Horas y horas poniéndola, rebobinando con el boli BIC para no gastar las pilas, poniéndola, rebobinando, poniéndola, así día tras día. Cuando no la estaba escuchando en mi habitación me ponía el video musical, si salía al jardín me llevaba el reproductor, incluso cuando iba al baño a sacar lo mejor de mí, allí me la llevaba también. Por aquel entonces, mediados de los 80, empezaron los videos musicales y había programas en la tele dedicados exclusivamente a este nuevo formato. Nosotros, cargados con una pila de cintas Beta (¡¡madre mía lo que están aprendiendo los más jóvenes!!!) veíamos todos esos programas para ir grabando los videos que más nos gustaban. Así, conseguimos confeccionar unas cuantas cintas de videos musicales que nos encantaba ver. El video de esta canción era uno de los que teníamos grabados y es el que os pongo esta semana. En 1987 sacaron un disco llamado precisamente 1987 en el que publicaron una nueva versión de la canción con la intención de llegar al público americano, lo que consiguieron junto con la archiconocida “Is this Love”. A pesar de que la segunda versión se convirtió en número uno en USA y que es, sin duda, la más conocida de las dos, para mí no hay color y la primera versión con su toque blues rock es infinitamente mejor, ¡¡pero no discutiré esto con nadie!!

Tuve que esperar al 26 de Julio de 2013, para ver a Whitesnake en un concierto con Europe y Def Leppard (ya lo siento Enrique Cocero, pero este grupo va a salir varias veces muy a tu pesar). A pesar de los problemas de voz de Coverdale, escuchar esta canción en directo por primera y, última vez hasta ahora, fue uno de esos momentos de felicidad plena de los que ya os he hablado y que por supuesto nunca podré olvidar. Allí estábamos unos cuantos, mi primo Mike, mi prima Tere, mis hermanos mayores, mis hermanas Camino (¡¡cómo te lo pasaste maja!!!) y Blanca, mi amigo Víctor (no digo nada… necesitaría un libro entero), Mario y al que ya he mencionado en este blog, mi amigo del cole, Borja, aunque ¡¡creo recordar que le perdimos a mitad de concierto!!

Esta canción abrió definitivamente mis ansias por conocer más grupos, más canciones que pudiera considerar mías, para compartirlas con mis amigos más cercanos y para, a través de ellas, construirme mi propia identidad. No sé si fue la época más feliz de mi vida porque como todo niño de doce o trece años tenía mis dudas, mis miedos, mis malas notas, mi timidez algunas veces excesiva, mi necesidad de sentirme parte de algún grupo y, a la vez, de ser yo mismo. Era toda una montaña rusa de sentimientos, pero siempre acompañado de algo que me ayudaba y tranquilizaba: la música.

La música y el deporte. Las tardes más perfectas que podía tener eran aquellas en que me juntaba con mis amigos de El Plantío, Víctor, Darío, David, Javi, Mike y Quique, para jugar al basket y escuchar música a la vez. Ellos conocieron a Guns n´Roses (ya sabéis chicos, hay que escucharlo tres veces seguidas y en la cuarta ya no puedes parar) meses antes del gran boom de la banda, mientras jugábamos un 3 contra 3 en la canasta de mi casa bajo una farola que, si por algún motivo era golpeada, se apagaba y tardaba unos 15 minutos en volver a lucir, tiempo que obviamente dedicábamos a escuchar con más atención la música. La farola y su enorme tornillo que sobresalía a la altura de los tobillos no eran el único riesgo de la cancha. En la línea de tiros libres teníamos un árbol contra el que solíamos chocar, siempre había algún coche aparcado en los límites del campo y además teníamos bordillos en ambos lados de la calle. Las líneas del triple eran las grietas del cemento y todos sabíamos perfectamente cuales eran. Yo pasaba tantas horas allí que, simplemente con mirar al suelo, sabía por las grietas donde estaba y no me hacía falta mirar a la canasta para meter mis lanzamientos lo que indignaba a mis amigos. En esas condiciones he jugado yo los mejores partidos de baloncesto de mi vida. Allí me pasaba las horas que no estaba escuchando música, tirando a canasta, haciendo entradas e incluso mates (ya un poco más mayor y por supuesto en mi canasta que no estaba a la altura reglamentaria). El basket me encantaba y, sin que quede muy presuntuoso, se me daba de cine. Mi ilusión más grande, una vez asumido que frontman no iba a ser, era la de ser jugador de basket, pensaba que tenía talento, pero desgraciadamente no acababa de dar el estirón (todavía sigo esperando). Yo rezaba mucho y decía: “¿Por qué me das el don de jugar tan bien al baloncesto y no me das más centímetros, no te entiendo?”. Después de muchos años lo entendí. Los veranos que pasábamos jugando todas las noches al baloncesto hasta que mi padre asomaba por la terraza para soltar su frase más recordada: “Vale ya con la pelotita de los cojones”, son uno de los recuerdos más increíbles que guardo de mi niñez y adolescencia y esa pandilla que, como todas las pandillas del mundo, se rompería años más tarde será la protagonista de la próxima canción.
